mixing 2 glass instead of four can lead to ...

I always heard that "Upma" is a very easy dish to make. So I tried the venture 2 days back. Here is how it went.

Rava (Sooji) -->2 cups
Onion -- half of a big one
Chilli (green) --> 3
mustard --> 1 tsp
oil --> 2 tsp
coriander --> a pinch

1. Heat the Rava on a pan till it turns golden brown. Be cautious not to burn the rava, keep it aside.
2. Heat a vessel, put oil in it. Once the oil is heated well, put the mustard into it, wait for sometime till you hear the "dish, tup" sound
3. put the onion, and chilli on to it and just get the onion fried for 30 seconds. Add 2 and half cups of water into it.
4. Once the water boils, slowly add the rava into by stirring the water.

5. After you are done with half of the rava, you can see that the rava has absorbed all your water, and you have a lump of rava water dough. You are left wondering what to do with the rest of the rava. This is a normal condition seen in first time Upma makers. Dont panic

6. Take more cups of water, add rava and water continuously until you have added the full rava onto the vessel.

7. You realize that you have forgotten to add salt into the Upma. So take 1 tsp of salt, mix in water and add on to the vessel.

This huge lump of rava water mix is called Upma. It smells good. Serve to yourself the half of it, because the rest is left to your room mate.

The room mate can change the condition of Upma, by adding more water to it, presuming that, by freezing it, or keeping it overnight the water will be absorbed by the rava, and he can have a better Upma. Experiments have proven that this can lead to throwing away of the half of the upma to your waste bin by your roomie. You are left with a full stomach and is made to drink lot of water overnight, because the raw rava is proven to be very tough to digest.

Heh,

I know how painful it is when you have to eat "watery" upma. So here is a simple hack... (I mean this is how I do it ;-))

1. Keep enough water to boil. Once you see some little bubbles forming, turn it low and...
2. heat the oil in a pan (on another stove)... put mustard, jeera and onion and fry till onion turns golden brown. You should add chillies and curry leaves after this. Pour Rava in the pan and heat it well (for about 10 mins on a low flame).
3. Add "hot" water into it till whole of rava gets soaked and a little more to cover that lump. Dont add lots of water. If you feel it's too dry then you can pour some after a while.
4. close the lid and let it soak the water.
5. garnish with coriander.

This way you don't miss the water measurements and you don't have excess Rava. :-)

I hope it helps.

Wonderful!! :) Been there done that :)
Although I must admit, it's very difficult to learn from it, messed up on Rava idly the other day... I guess that fiasco warrents another post on my blog.

A friend here suggested V's method too. I usually put the Rava slowly into water. The quantity /was/ a problem but it's okay now and I make it often. :)

Good luck.
